{"id":1345,"date":"2013-01-10T07:34:45","date_gmt":"2013-01-10T13:34:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nflconcussionlitigation.com\/?p=1345"},"modified":"2013-01-10T08:18:16","modified_gmt":"2013-01-10T14:18:16","slug":"report-junior-seau-had-cte","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nflconcussionlitigation.com\/?p=1345","title":{"rendered":"REPORT: Junior Seau Had CTE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a not-so-surprising fashion, the National Institutes of Health and ESPN have <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/espn\/otl\/story\/_\/id\/8830344\/study-junior-seau-brain-shows-chronic-brain-damage-found-other-nfl-football-players\">reported<\/a> that the late Junior Seau\u2019s brain showed signs of the neurodegenerative disease, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).<\/p>\n<p>Seau\u2019s brain was examined at the National Institutes of Health.\u00a0 The official diagnosis was a \u201cmulti-focal tauopathy consistent with a diagnosis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/pdf\/2013\/0110\/espn_otl_NIH_Statement.pdf\">released by the NIH<\/a>, several neuropathologists were invited to examine Seau\u2019s brain. The pathologists found \u201cabnormal, small clusters called neurofibrillary tangles of protein known as tau within multiple regions of Seau\u2019s brain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seau\u2019s family told ESPN that they \u201cfound solace in the CTE diagnosis because it helped explain some of Seau\u2019s uncharacteristic behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked whether the NFL was slow to embrace the link between football and later-life cognitive decline, Seau\u2019s ex-wife said: \u201cToo slow for us, yeah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seau\u2019s son said the diagnosis \u201cmakes me realize he is not invincible.\u201d He then asked rhetorically, \u201cIs it worth it? I\u2019m not sure. It is not worth it to me to not have a dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Mark Fainaru-Wada, the family is evaluating whether to join the concussion lawsuits.<\/p>\n<p>This long-awaited report puts to bed some of the misconceived notions that Seau did not suffer from CTE. Earlier this summer, <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2012\/aug\/21\/local\/la-me-0821-junior-seau-20120821\">a misleading report<\/a> was made by the Los Angeles Times that sloppily implied Seau did not have CTE. The report even led one executive from the NFLPA to exclaim, <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/NolanHarrison74\/statuses\/237987416445698048\">\u201cThis is why we don\u2019t jump to conclusions.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In any event, the world now knows that Seau &#8212; like so many other former players that have engaged in years of battle on the gridiron &#8212; was suffering from CTE.<\/p>\n<p>We can only hope that this discovery will bring the medical community one step closer to diagnosing CTE in living players before it is too late.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a not-so-surprising fashion, the National Institutes of Health and ESPN have reported that the late Junior Seau\u2019s brain showed signs of the neurodegenerative disease, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
